Additional information

Italy's ongoing "Le Eccellenze Italiane" collector series has made a habit of pairing regional identity with legal tender denominations that will never see a cash register. This Piedmont issue commemorates two of the region's most commercially significant agricultural products: Nebbiolo-based Barolo, granted DOCG status in 1980, and Piedmontese gianduja chocolate, whose origins trace to Napoleonic-era cocoa shortages that prompted local confectioners to extend supply with roasted hazelnuts from the Langhe hills.

Copper-nickel bimetallic issues in this series are struck to collector finish at the Rome mint.
