Bradbury Wilkinson printed several Portuguese issues during this period, and the 5 Escudos went through three distinct print runs as demand repeatedly outpaced supply in the early republic years. The third printing is distinguished from earlier runs by subtle plate wear characteristics and, in some cases, minor typographic shifts in the serial numbering blocks — details that matter more to variety collectors than the catalog entry suggests.
Portugal's monetary situation in 1924 was precarious enough that small-denomination notes circulated hard and wore out fast. Low-denomination survivors in any presentable condition are genuinely uncommon.
