Reverse description The shield of Portugal occupies the central field, displaying the traditional arms comprising five escutcheons in cross arrangement each charged with five bezants, surrounded by a bordure of seven castles, all within a decorative cartouche. Eight six-pointed stars are evenly distributed around the shield in the field, four to each side. The denomination 5$00, with the escudo sign integrated into the numeral, appears in large raised characters below the shield. The engravers' signatures MARTINS BARATA DEL. and M. NORTE SCULP. are inscribed in small lettering along the lower left and right periphery respectively.
