Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Swazi independence from Britain in 1968, this coin appeared during a politically fraught moment: Mswati III had dissolved parliament in 1973 — technically his father Sobhuza II did so, a ban Mswati maintained — leaving Eswatini one of the last absolute monarchies on the continent. The Golden Jubilee branding served an obvious legitimizing function for a reign increasingly scrutinized by international human rights bodies.
KM#73 is a relatively recent addition to the series, struck in brass rather than the cupro-nickel of earlier 5 Emalangeni issues.
