Wolfgang von Schrattenbach served as Prince-Bishop of Olomouc from 1711 until his death in 1738, presiding over one of the wealthiest ecclesiastical territories in Moravia during the reign of Charles VI. Large gold multiples of this kind were not struck for circulation — they functioned as presentation pieces, distributed as diplomatic gifts or rewards of honor at court. The Olomouc mint was among the few episcopal mints in the Bohemian lands still producing gold multiples this late into the 18th century.
Schrattenbach was also the bishop who appointed the young Leopold Mozart's son — Wolfgang Amadeus — to an unpaid court position in Salzburg years later, though that connection belongs to his successor's tenure.
