Obverse description Laureate, draped bust of Emperor Leopold I facing right, set within a beaded inner circle. The imperial legend in Latin encircles the effigy, commencing at 12 o'clock, identifying the emperor by name and title. The portrait reflects the high-relief baroque style typical of mid-17th century Viennese coinage.

Additional information

Leopold I's multi-ducat issues of the early 1660s were struck primarily as presentation pieces and diplomatic gifts rather than trade currency. The Vienna mint produced them in limited runs, often hand-selected from the best-prepared planchets available. Her#86 and Her#87 represent two distinct die pairings documented by Herinek, making attribution to a specific year dependent entirely on die identification rather than any date on the coin itself.

Leopold had assumed the throne in 1658 at seventeen, and his early reign was consumed by war with the Ottomans and negotiation of the Peace of the Pyrenees. High-denomination gold of this period frequently left Austria as subsidy payments to allied German princes.
