Obverse description Central device depicts Emperor Charles IV kneeling right, presenting the university charter to Saint Wenceslaus, who stands facing, nimbed, clad in armour and cape, holding a banner in his right hand and a shield in his left, both figures on an ornate podium. The field features a diamond lattice pattern with roses and various symbolic devices including an atomic model, Rod of Asclepius, anthropomorphic sun, book, owl, scales, and a map compass. The circular Latin legend reads UNIVERSITAS CAROLINA PRAGENSIS with the founding date 1348 in the lower exergue.
