| Reverse description | A bold six-armed decorative cross dominates the field, its arms terminating in stylised lily or trefoil blossoms and flanked by additional floral sprays in the angles between the arms. At the centre of the cross, within an oval cartouche, the denomination V DUCAT is inscribed. The fineness mark 980 appears at the base of the lower arm. The surrounding legend, divided into two arcs by small rosette stops, reads PRO PROSPERITATE MUNDI above and AUREUS MAGNUS below. |

| Additional information |
The Second Vatican Council opened in October 1962 under John XXIII and continued under Paul VI after John's death in June 1963. This piece is a private gold strike — "Aureus Magnus" issues were produced by West German medal manufacturers, most notably Scheide & Sohn, for the collector and devotional trade rather than through any state mint mandate. They carry no legal tender status and were never circulated.
The 1963 date places it in the transitional year of the Council, between the first and second sessions.
