Obverse description The obverse displays the Basel eagle, the heraldic symbol of the city, depicted as a large spread-winged eagle with an elaborately scaled body, set at center in high relief against a flat field. The eagle holds a scepter in its right talon and supports an ornate cartouche bearing the Basel arms — a diagonal staff on a shield — to its left. A milled border frames the coin, and the circular Latin legend DOMINE CONSERVA NOS IN PACE (Lord, preserve us in peace) runs around the full periphery, separated from the eagle by the inner edge of the coin.
