On the eagle's breast is superimposed a quartered heraldic shield bearing the four-fold arms of the city of Magdeburg. The circular Latin legend surrounds the entire design within a beaded border, invoking a biblical blessing upon the city's walls and palaces. The engraving is bold and characteristic of late sixteenth-century German municipal gold coinage. |
