Palau's sovereign coinage program, administered through government licensing agreements rather than a functioning domestic monetary system, has produced hundreds of commemorative issues since the late 1990s. The Year of the Monkey pieces were struck for the 2016 lunar cycle, a year that also saw competing issues from Cook Islands, Niue, and Tuvalu targeting the same collector market — all nominally legal tender in nations where they would never circulate.
The KM#753.1 designation distinguishes this from at least one variant in the same release.
