Palau's animal-themed bullion and collector series has produced dozens of issues since the 1990s, most struck by the Bald Eagle Mint or B.H. Mayer's Kunstprägeanstalt in Germany under licensing arrangements — Palau itself has no mint. The Year of the Monkey falls in the Chinese lunisolar calendar cycle of 2016, specifically the Year of the Fire Monkey, which recurs only every 60 years when the 12-year animal cycle intersects with the 10-element stem cycle.
