Obverse description The central field features the coat of arms of the Republic of Palau, depicted as a shield containing a seated figure of Neptune holding a trident, accompanied by a mermaid, waves, a celestial star, and a crescent, all within an ornate floral cartouche. The inscription RAINBOW'S END appears in the lower portion of the shield. A traditional outrigger canoe with a paddler is shown above the shield. The legend REPUBLIC OF PALAU arcs along the upper periphery in Latin characters, flanked by five-pointed stars on each side, while the denomination 5$ is inscribed at the bottom of the field.

Reverse description The reverse displays a finely detailed gilded Chinese dragon rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished black field, its sinuous body coiling dynamically across the entire design area with scaled texture, clawed feet, and an expressive horned head breathing wisps of flame. Stylized clouds appear in the background field. The legend YEAR OF THE DRAGON arcs along the upper periphery in Latin characters, while the Chinese character 龍 (dragon) and the date 2012 are inscribed at the bottom center. The border is composed of an intricate decorative band featuring alternating geometric link patterns and beaded pearl motifs in the traditional Chinese style.
