Obverse description The coat of arms of the Republic of Palau occupies the central field, depicting a shield charged with a seated Neptune figure holding a trident, accompanied by a mermaid, an open treasure chest, and stylized waves, surmounted by a star. The shield is adorned with floral and beaded mantling. Above the arms, a traditional outrigger canoe with a paddler is depicted in the upper field. The legend REPUBLIC OF PALAU arcs along the upper periphery, with eight five-pointed stars distributed around the inner border. The inscription RAINBOW'S END appears in the lower portion of the shield, and the denomination 5$ is inscribed at the base of the coin.

Reverse description A gilded Chinese dragon rendered in high relief dominates the deeply mirrored black field, its sinuous scaled body coiling dynamically across the entire central area, with outstretched clawed feet and horned head facing left with open jaws. Stylized clouds in matte finish are scattered throughout the field. The border consists of a decorative double ring of alternating beaded and fret-pattern motifs. The arc legend YEAR OF THE DRAGON is inscribed along the upper periphery, while the Chinese character 龍 (dragon) and the date 2012 appear in the lower field.
