Reverse description A heraldic bald eagle, displayed with wings spread, occupies the central field, grasping in its beak a flowing ribbon banner inscribed with the Olympic Centennial dates 1896 · 1996, commemorating the centenary of the modern Olympic Games. The national legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arcs across the upper field, while the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM appears below. The denomination FIVE DOLLARS is inscribed near the lower rim, accompanied by the West Point Mint mark W and the initials of engravers FG and JM. The reverse was designed by John M. Mercanti.
