Volubilis, the best-preserved Roman city in Morocco, was a provincial capital of Mauretania Tingitana and remained inhabited well into the medieval period — long after Rome withdrew. Palau has issued dozens of ancient-site silver pieces in this format, part of a commercially driven series targeting collectors rather than any genuine commemorative purpose tied to Volubilis itself.
Morocco began systematic excavation of the site only in the early twentieth century under the French Protectorate.
