Obverse description The central field bears the official Seal of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, depicting a frigatebird with outstretched wings above a traditional Marshallese outrigger canoe and ocean waves, flanked by palm trees to the left and a sailing canoe to the right, with crossed traditional tools and a radiant sun in the upper field. A scroll at the base of the seal bears the word SEAL. The entire central device is encircled by a decorative chain border, with the legend REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS arcing along the upper periphery and the national motto JEPILPILIN KE EJUKAAN along the lower periphery. The denomination $5 appears to the left and the date 1998 to the right, between the chain border and the central seal.

Reverse description The reverse features a detailed high-relief depiction of the protected cruiser USS Olympia underway at sea, rendered in fine engraving with elaborate rigging, multiple masts flying signal flags, twin funnels emitting billowing smoke clouds, and a full broadside view of the vessel's hull riding stylized waves. The numeral 5 appears to the right of the ship in the mid-field. The legend USS OLYMPIA arcs along the upper periphery of the coin, with the denomination DOLLARS inscribed along the lower rim.
