Additional information

Barbados severed its constitutional ties to the British Crown on November 30, 2021, becoming a republic for the first time since independence in 1966. This coin was issued that same year to mark the transition, with Dame Sandra Mason simultaneously inaugurated as the country's first President. The Royal Canadian Mint struck the piece on behalf of the Central Bank of Barbados.

Jefferson's connection to Barbados is a minor but genuine footnote: his 1760 visit — the only time he ever left North American soil — was made to accompany his ailing brother Lawrence.
