Obverse description The central field features the Coat of Arms of the Republic of Liberia, depicting a sailing ship approaching a rocky shore beneath a palm tree, with a rising sun in the background and a dove in flight above; the shield is supported by a decorative frame and flanked by the date 2009 divided to either side. A ribbon scroll above the shield bears the national motto THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE, while a second scroll below reads REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA. The legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA arcs along the upper periphery, and the denomination FIVE DOLLARS is inscribed in bold letters along the lower periphery. The design is rendered in a mirror-like proof finish with a beaded inner border.

Additional information

Liberia's collector-market commemorative program, active through the 2000s, was largely designed for export sale rather than domestic circulation — most pieces were marketed through European and American distributors and never meaningfully entered Liberian commerce. KM#953 is a product of that industry rather than of any specific policy or historical occasion tied to Jefferson himself.
