Obverse description The national arms of the Republic of the Marshall Islands occupies the central field, depicting a traditional Marshallese stick chart navigation device flanked by a radiant sun and a crescent moon in the upper portion, with a sailing canoe and a coconut palm in the middle register, and a geometric pattern in the lower field. A ribbon scroll inscribed SEAL appears below the central device, with the Marshallese national motto JEPILPILIN KE EJUKAAN along the lower periphery. The legend REPUBLIC OF THE MARSHALL ISLANDS arcs along the upper rim, with the denomination $5 to the left and the date 1997 to the right. The entire design is bordered by a decorative chain motif.
