The Atlantic Bank of the City of New York was chartered in 1851 and operated from Brooklyn, despite the "City of New York" designation — a distinction that mattered legally at the time, when Brooklyn was still an independent city. The bank survived the Panic of 1857, which wiped out dozens of weaker New York institutions, and was still issuing notes in reasonable volume by 1859.
Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Co. was among the most technically accomplished security printers operating before the American Bank Note Company consolidation of 1858 absorbed most of its principals. Notes from this transitional period carry plate work produced under the old firm's name even as the business was being reorganized.
