| Obverse description | Orange intaglio-printed note with a central oval portrait vignette of the Xuantong Emperor (Puyi) in imperial court dress positioned to the left, flanked by an elaborate scenic underprint in which a large dragon soars through clouds above horsemen traversing a misty landscape to the right. Chinese characters denoting the denomination appear at each corner, with the bank title inscription running along the top margin. The overall design is executed in the refined engraved style characteristic of American Bank Note Company issues of the period. |

| Reverse description | Deep maroon guilloche design built entirely on engraved lathe-work, radiating symmetrically from a central circular medallion bearing the large Chinese character 伍 (five) at its centre and encircled by an English legend. The numeral '5' recurs within the ornate border corners, and the interlocking lace-pattern underprint fills the field without the use of pictorial vignettes, giving the reverse a purely typographic and geometric character. |
