Obverse description Printed in black, the obverse carries a central allegorical vignette of the Confederacy striking down the Union, flanked by a ornate lazy 5 numeral. A bearded male figure with a water jug appears at the lower right, rendered in the engraved style typical of mid-19th century American bank note production. The note bears manuscript or printed authorization lines for the Auditor and Treasurer, with the place of issue given as Baton Rouge.
Obverse lettering THE STATE OF LOUISIANA WILL PAY TO THE BEARER FIVE DOLLARS at the Treasurer`s Office October 10th 1862 BATON ROUGE _____________ _____________ FOR AUDITOR FOR TREASURER
Reverse description Printed entirely in green, the reverse is dominated by a large central oval guilloche medallion bearing a bold white Roman numeral V in underprint, framed by intricate lathe-work patterns. Two smaller circular medallions, each containing a white arabesque numeral 5 within a floral guilloche border, are positioned at the left and right extremities. The overall design relies entirely on geometric engine-turned ornament without pictorial vignettes.
