Reverse description The reverse is engraved in green intaglio and carries oval portrait vignettes of Ulysses S. Grant at left and Philip Sheridan at right, each set within ornate guilloche frames. A large Roman numeral 'V' occupies the centre, surmounted by a winged allegorical figure, flanked by elaborate lathe-work engine-turned underprint patterns and corner numeral '5' medallions. Denomination and certificate type inscriptions appear within a central panel enclosed by geometric borders.
