Casino scrip occupies a genuinely odd legal corner — issued for use within a single property, technically a private instrument rather than a negotiable note, and almost never designed with collectibility in mind. The Showboat's combination of casino and a 24-lane bowling alley under one roof made it an Atlantic City outlier from its 1987 opening; the bowling center was not an afterthought but a deliberate marketing hook aimed at a less affluent crowd than the boardwalk properties were chasing.
Scrip of this type was routinely pulled and replaced to prevent counterfeiting, meaning survival rates depend almost entirely on whether a piece left the building before redemption cycles caught up with it.
