Palau has issued novelty automotive commemoratives since the mid-2000s, targeting the European collector market rather than any domestic circulation purpose. The Renault 4 CV — France's first post-war mass-produced car, built from 1947 to 1961 with over a million units manufactured — was an unlikely survivor of the Occupation: early prototype development occurred secretly during the German occupation of France, with Renault engineers hiding the project from Nazi authorities who controlled the factory for military production.
