Reverse description The reverse presents conjoined portrait effigies of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and Diana, Princess of Wales, both depicted in three-quarter facing bust form, each wearing a broad-brimmed hat. The Queen Mother, positioned to the left, raises one hand in a greeting gesture, while Princess Diana stands to her right. The upper legend DIANA PRINCESS OF WALES arcs around the periphery, flanked by the dates 1961 and 1997 on the left and right respectively. The inscription THE QUEEN MOTHER curves along the lower border of the coin.

Additional information

Liberia's Central Bank issued a succession of commemorative copper-nickel crowns through the 1990s aimed squarely at the international collector market rather than domestic circulation. This piece was struck in 1997, the same year Diana died in Paris, making the pairing of her with the Queen Mother — still alive at the time and not approaching death until 2002 — an awkward bit of pre-emptive memorial marketing.
