Additional information

Liberia issued a wave of commemorative copper-nickel crowns throughout the 1990s explicitly for the collector export market — none intended for domestic circulation. This piece was struck following Diana's death in August 1997, one of dozens of foreign memorial issues that flooded the market that year. Liberia had no connection to Diana whatsoever; the coin exists because the country's government was licensing its minting authority to generate hard currency during a period of severe civil conflict and economic collapse under the Taylor regime.
