Liberia's late-1990s commemorative program was essentially a commercial licensing operation, producing dozens of copper-nickel crown-sized pieces aimed squarely at the collector gift market rather than circulation. This piece marks the 1984 birth of Prince Harry, issued thirteen years after the fact — the timing dictated entirely by Diana's death in August 1997, which created sudden international demand for anything bearing her image.
KM#456 is one of several Diana-related Liberian issues struck that year. None were intended for domestic use in a country then mid-way through a devastating civil war.
