Issued the year after Diana's death in August 1997, this is one of dozens of commemorative strikes produced by Pacific island nations with minimal numismatic infrastructure — Kiribati contracted the actual minting to outside facilities, as it has done for virtually all its collector coinage. The market was flooded with Diana memorial issues from 1997 through 1999, and pieces like this one were sold primarily through television shopping channels and mail-order catalogues rather than through coin dealers.
Collector demand has remained soft for nearly all non-Commonwealth Diana issues. KM#32 is no exception.
