Obverse description The national arms of Kiribati, depicting a shield charged with a yellow frigate bird in flight above a rising sun over ocean waves, occupies the central field, framed by a background of undulating wave-like horizontal lines evoking the Pacific Ocean. The arms are rendered in fine relief against the proof field. The curved legend along the left and lower rim reads KIRIBATI and the date range 1997 - 2000, with the denomination $5 appearing at the upper right. The coin's distinctive jagged irregular shape, representing one half of a larger two-coin puzzle set, is evident in the truncated upper-right portion of the design.

Additional information

Kiribati adopted its own coinage in 1979 upon independence from Britain, but the islands had no meaningful pre-colonial monetary tradition — which makes commemorative issues like this one effectively the entirety of the nation's numismatic output. The "Powerful Empires" series was produced for the collector market and had no circulation role whatsoever in a country whose GDP at the time ranked among the lowest in the Pacific.

Struck by the Pobjoy Mint under contract, as were most Kiribati collector issues of this period.
