Obverse description The obverse bears the national arms of the Republic of Palau rendered in high relief at center, depicting two mermaids flanking a traditional sailing vessel on a shield, enclosed within an ornate cartouche. The curved legend REPUBLIC OF PALAU arcs above the arms, with the series name RAINBOWS END inscribed within the lower portion of the shield. The denomination 5$ appears below the arms, the fineness .999 is struck at the upper field, and the date 2017 is positioned at the base. Six small stars are arranged symmetrically on either side of the arms in the field.

Reverse description The reverse presents a bold, three-dimensional high-relief effigy of a human skull wearing a pirate's bandana, rendered with exceptional sculptural depth and antiqued finish. The empty eye sockets are deeply recessed and darkened, imparting a dramatic chiaroscuro effect, while the nasal cavity and exposed teeth are rendered with anatomical precision. The bandana is sculpted with naturalistic folds draped across the cranium and tied at the rear, with trailing ends extending to either side. The entire design conforms to the skull-shaped flan, with the minting technique showcasing pronounced contrast between the burnished high points and the blackened recesses.
