Obverse description The national coat of arms of Palau occupies the central field, depicted as a shield enclosing a figure of Neptune seated amid waves, holding a trident, accompanied by a mermaid to his right and a treasure chest to his left, with a star above; the shield is framed by an ornate floral and beaded border. Above the shield, a traditional Palauan outrigger canoe with a paddler is rendered in relief against a mirror-polished black field. Eight six-pointed stars are arranged in a semicircle around the left and right flanks of the design. The circular legend 'REPUBLIC OF PALAU' arcs across the upper border, while the series inscription 'RAINBOW'S END' appears at the base of the shield, and the denomination '5$' is struck in the lower field.
