| Additional information |
The Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. commonwealth since 1978, has no historical connection to the Wittelsbach dynasty whatsoever. This coin belongs to a category of small-denomination gold issues produced for collector markets by jurisdictions that license their name to private minting programs — the "issuer" is nominal. Otto I ruled Bavaria from 1886 until his formal deposition in 1913, though he had been incurably insane and institutionalized since 1875, with his uncle Luitpold and later his cousin Ludwig III governing as regent throughout his entire reign.
