Obverse description The full coat of arms of the Republic of Liberia occupies the central field, depicting a three-masted sailing ship at sea, a palm tree, a rising sun, a plow, and a shovel on a coastal landscape, all within a scalloped shield. Above the shield, a scroll bears the national motto legend THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE. The outer legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA arcs along the upper periphery, with a second instance of REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA inscribed on a ribbon scroll at the base of the arms. The date is divided either side of the shield, reading 20 03 on the illustrated example.

Additional information

Liberia's early 2000s commemorative program was a prolific and often criticized commercial venture — coins were designed and marketed primarily for the collector trade, with little connection to Liberian monetary policy or circulation. This series targeting Vatican numismatic themes was produced under licensing arrangements typical of the era's souvenir coinage industry, where small nations leased their sovereign issuing authority to foreign distributors.

Few of these pieces ever entered Liberian commerce.
