One of 28 silver issues struck for the 1976 Montréal Games, this coin was sold in sets through a subscription program that the Canadian government hoped would offset Olympic construction costs — a project that had ballooned to nearly $1.4 billion CAD, roughly six times the original budget. The scheme raised far less than anticipated, and Montréal taxpayers were still servicing the debt in 2006.
The .400 fineness was a compromise, keeping silver content low enough to price the sets accessibly while maintaining collector appeal. Most examples stayed in their original packaging, which accounts for the high survival rate in mint state.
