The coin is shaped to represent the face of Medusa. According to the myth, Medusa was originally a beautiful woman who caught the eye of the sea god Poseidon. For jealousy and rage, Athena transformed Medusa`s hair into snakes and cursed her with the power to turn anyone who looked into her eyes into stone. Portrayed as a tragic figure, Medusa is represented as condemned to a life of loneliness and isolation.
