| Obverse description | The obverse displays the national coat of arms of Palau within a decorative shield, depicting a crowned Neptune seated and holding a trident, accompanied by a mermaid to his right, with a treasure chest and marine flora in the field. Above the shield, a traditional Palauan outrigger canoe is shown in the upper field. Eight six-pointed stars are arranged along the inner border, flanking the arms. The curved legend REPUBLIC OF PALAU arcs along the upper rim, while the denomination 5$ appears in the lower field below the shield. |

| Reverse description | The reverse features a finely detailed relief depiction of the Matterhorn, the iconic pyramidal peak of the Alps, rising dramatically against a mirror-polished field. In the lower right quadrant, a vibrant colour-enamelled spray of alpine rhododendrons in pink and green provides a naturalistic contrast to the silver relief. To the lower left, an inscribed plaque reads MATTERHORN / 4478m, and the date 2009 appears on a scroll-shaped banner at the bottom centre.
