Hutt River — formally the Province of Hutt River — was a self-declared micronation in Western Australia that seceded from the Commonwealth in 1970 under Leonard Casley, who later styled himself Prince Leonard I. Its coinage was never legal tender anywhere with binding recognition, but was produced in sufficient quantity and seriousness that it earned World Coin catalog listings. The M-109 Paladin is a self-propelled 155mm howitzer adopted by the U.S. Army in 1963 and subsequently exported widely — an odd subject for an Australian micronation's coin, but Hutt River issued an ambitious military hardware series through the early 1990s alongside its royalty and wildlife themes.
The TOW missile, developed by Hughes Aircraft and fielded from 1970, was among the most widely deployed anti-armor weapons of the Cold War at the time this piece was struck.
