Additional information

Hutt River Province, the self-declared micronation established by Leonard Casley in Western Australia in 1970, issued coins throughout the 1980s and 1990s with no legal tender status anywhere. This piece commemorates the Battle of Monte Cassino, the brutal four-month Allied campaign in 1944 to break through the German Winter Line in central Italy — one of the costliest engagements of the Italian campaign, with combined casualties exceeding 55,000.

The connection between an Australian wheat farmer's breakaway province and a WWII Italian battlefield is purely opportunistic; Hutt River produced commemoratives on any subject likely to attract collector interest.
