Obverse description The obverse is dominated by a large circular intaglio portrait vignette of Abraham Lincoln at centre, set within an ornate lathe-work frame that gives the note its popular 'porthole' designation. A blue Treasury seal is positioned to the left of the portrait, balanced by a large blue numeral '5' to the right, all printed over an intricate guilloche underprint. The Silver Certificate obligation text runs across the upper portion of the note in serifed letterpress.
