Glenn's 1998 shuttle mission aboard Discovery was engineered partly to study the effects of spaceflight on aging — he was 77, the oldest person ever to fly in space. The Marshall Islands issued commemoratives aggressively throughout the 1990s, producing dozens of topical five-dollar pieces annually for the collector market rather than any domestic circulation need. Most were struck by the British Royal Mint under contract.
