Liberia's niobium coinage from this period was part of a broader wave of novelty issues produced for the international collector market — coins legal-tender in name but never intended for circulation in Monrovia or anywhere else. The niobium core gives these pieces their distinctive colored appearance, a technique pioneered by the Austrian Mint in 2003 and quickly licensed or imitated by several issuing authorities with minimal numismatic traditions but aggressive collector programs.
