Palau's marine-themed collector program has produced dozens of issues since the 1990s, most of them Silver-based and heavily aimed at the thematic novelty market. This piece features Hyriopsis cumingii, the triangle sail mussel, a freshwater bivalve native to East and Southeast Asia and one of the primary hosts used in cultured pearl production — an industry worth billions annually in China alone.
The gold plating on these Palauan issues is applied post-strike, a common finishing technique for this series rather than a minting distinction.
