Bradbury Wilkinson produced this series across a sixteen-year window that bridged Hong Kong's postwar reconstruction boom and the early 1970s labour unrest that repeatedly shook the colony. The plate-printed intaglio work BW applied to HSBC notes of this period is among the finer commercial banknote printing of the era — the firm's New Malden facility handled several colonial currency contracts simultaneously, and the quality control shows.
Pick 181 runs a long date range precisely because no single political or monetary event forced a redesign. The series was simply retired as HSBC modernised its note programme in the mid-1970s.
