Obverse description Printed in purple on a multicolour guilloche underprint, the obverse is dominated by the bank's intaglio-engraved armorial vignette at centre, surmounted by the full title inscription and Chinese characters. To the left, a large oval watermark space is framed by fine lathe-work; to the right, a classical seated female allegorical figure is rendered in detailed intaglio. The denomination 'FIVE DOLLARS' appears in a bold central panel, with Chinese numeral characters 伍圓 repeated at all four corners, two manuscript facsimile signatures of the Chief Accountant and Chief Manager, and the issue date and place at foot.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in a rich combination of purple, orange, green and yellow, with an elaborate multicolour guilloche border of floral and star rosette motifs. At centre, a detailed intaglio vignette presents the neoclassical HSBC head office building in Hong Kong, set within an oval frame and flanked by palm trees. At the top, a winged allegorical figure is engraved above the bank's name in an arched banner, while denomination numerals '5' and Chinese characters 伍 appear in ornate cartouches at left and right; a blank panel occupies the upper right quadrant.
