USS Constitution earned her nickname "Old Ironsides" during the War of 1812 when British shot was observed bouncing off her thick live-oak hull — the wood, denser than most timber used in shipbuilding, had been sourced specifically from Georgia and South Carolina. She never lost an engagement in her active career, capturing or sinking numerous British vessels. The Marshall Islands issued this piece as part of a broader commemorative series exploiting the collector novelty market that dominated the 1990s; these circulated only as novelties and were never legal tender in any practical sense.
