Liberia has issued commemorative coinage under licensing arrangements with foreign distributors since the 1970s, producing pieces aimed almost entirely at the collector market rather than domestic circulation. This Washington piece is part of a broad series of American Presidents coins issued around the time of the 2008–2009 U.S. presidential transition, when demand for Washington and Lincoln material briefly spiked.
Silver-plated copper-nickel issues from this program were struck in large quantities and are encountered frequently in dealer stock worldwide.
