The Board of Commissioners of Currency, Malaya was established in 1897 as a shared currency authority serving British Malaya and the Straits Settlements — an unusual colonial arrangement where note-issuing authority was deliberately separated from the banking system. The 1941 series was printed by Waterlow & Sons well before the Japanese invasion of December that year, but the timing proved catastrophic: large quantities of notes were captured intact, and the occupying forces used existing British Malayan currency alongside their own military scrip during the early occupation period.
Muirberg's tenure as Chairman was brief and overshadowed entirely by the fall of Singapore in February 1942.
