Reverse description A vivid full-color depiction of a Chinese imperial dragon rendered in rich orange and red tones, coiling dynamically across stylised green and white waves, with a pearl or orb visible to the left. The background features a blue tiled wall evoking traditional Chinese architectural relief sculpture. A Greek key meander border frames the top of the rectangular field, with the Chinese character 福 (fortune) displayed prominently in gilt at the centre top. The denomination 5 DOLLARS and the fineness and weight specifications appear in raised letters along the lower border.

Additional information

Niue's arrangement with the New Zealand Mint has made it one of the more prolific licensing vehicles for commemorative silver issues, and the 2012 lunar dragon entry is squarely in that category. The island's GDP is effectively dwarfed by its annual coin program revenue.

KM#686 was struck for the collector market with no pretense of circulation — Niue's actual transactional currency remains the New Zealand dollar.
